shuǐ diào gē tóu
水调歌头

míngyuè jǐshí yǒu?
明月几时有？
bǎjiǔ wèn qīngtiān.
把酒问青天。
bùzhī tiānshàng gōngqué,
不知天上宫阙，
jīnxī shì hé nián?
今夕是何年？
wǒ yù chéng fēng guī qù,
我欲乘风归去，
yòu kǒng qióng lóu yù yǔ,
又恐琼楼玉宇，
gāo chù bùshèng hán.
高处不胜寒。
qǐwǔ nòng qīng yǐng,
起舞弄清影，
héshì zài rénjiān?
何似在人间？
zhuǎn zhū gé,
转朱阁，
dī qǐ hù,
低绮户，
zhào wúmián.
照无眠。
bù yìng yǒu hèn,
不应有恨，
hé shì chǎng xiàng bié shí yuán?
何事长向别时圆？
rén yǒu bēihuānlíhé,
人有悲欢离合，
yuè yǒu yīn qíng yuán quē,
月有阴晴圆缺，
cǐ shì gǔ nán quán.
此事古难全。
dàn yuàn rén chángjiǔ,
但愿人长久，
qiānlǐ gòng chánjuān.
千里共婵娟。
To the Tune of Water Melody
Su Dongpo (1037-1101 AD)
(In the Mid-Autumn Festival of the year of Bingchen (丙辰年，1076 AD), we drank all night till dawn and got very drunk. I wrote this Ci poem while I was thinking of (my younger brother) Ziyou.)
When did the bright moon come into being?
Raising the cup I question the blue sky.
I wonder the palace in the heaven,
Is in what year as of tonight?
On the back of wind I want to return to thee,
Yet afraid the crystal tower and jade hall,
Up there are too cold for me to bear.
Dancing with my shadow under the moonlight,
The delight in this mundane world is compared to none.
Moving around the red pavilion,
Hanging low at the carved window,
The moon shines its light on the sleepless inside.
It sure holds no grudge to us,
Yet why does it always turn so around at time of parting?
We have sorrow and happiness, separation and reunion,
Moon is dark or clear, crescent or full,
It's been the regret since time begins.
I wish a long life for all my beloved ones,
To share the bright moon from a thousand miles apart.
