Farewell to Assistant Wu's Return to The Capital with A Snow Song
by Cen Shen (715-770 AD)The north wind sweeping the earth breaks camelthorn grasses,
Snow falls in the barbarian skies as early as August.
As if the spring breeze starts to blow overnight,
Thousands and thousands pear trees bloom and strive.
Drifting through bead curtain the snow flakes moisten the silk tent,
Fur coats can keep the warmth no more and brocade quilts feel lightweight.
The general's horns decorated bow becomes too stiff to draw,
And his armors turn too cold to be put on.
The crisscrossing surface of the Gobi desert has been frozen near and far,
And the gloomy overcast clouds are hanging low and still for thousands of miles.
Central command has laid out fine wines to bid a farewell for the returning guest,
Huqin, Pipa and Qiang flute music are playing.
Outside the barrack gate, snow continues to fall into dusk,
Frozen in coldness, the red flags stop waving in the wind.
I say farewell to you outside the east gate of Luntai,
At the time all trails on Heavenly Mountain are covered by snow.
Along the meandering mountain road you disappear from my sight,
Only a line of tracks of your horse in the snow is there left.
